Organization Description

Mission statementUpward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves: high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.
Service(s) descriptionUW Upward Bound provides college preparation services to eligible low-income and potential first-generation college students. Upward Bound provides tutoring, advising, SAT test preparation, and career and college exploration opportunities. Each summer, Upward Bound students spend six weeks on the UW Seattle campus attending a Summer Academy to experience the academic and social atmosphere of a major university. Students receive instruction in UW classrooms and enroll in language arts, math, foreign language, science, and elective classes. Upward Bound supports students with college applications, seeking scholarships, and applying for financial aid. Services are free to participants. Upward Bound is funded by the US Department of Education and is hosted by the UW Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity.
