Organization Description

Mission statementOur mission is to enable high-poverty high schools to achieve college- and career-ready graduation rates of 80 percent or better and to enable high-poverty middle schools to prepare their students to enter high school with good attendance, behaviors, and course performance ready to succeed in challenging college- and career-ready high school courses.
Service(s) descriptionCollaboration between City Year, Communities In Schools and Talent Development Secondary to provide tiered intervention supports. Working with administrators and teachers, a Diplomas Now team organizes and supports schools to strengthen achievement and engagement. Diplomas Now provides curriculum, teacher coaching and student support. For the neediest students, Diplomas Now provides case management and connects them with community resources, such as counseling, health care, housing, food and clothing.
Program impactAki Kurose MS impact: Increased the number of students missing fewer than 10 days per year by 18 percentage points, from 42 percent in 2009-2010 to 60 percent in 2014-2015.

Behavior/Social and Emotional Learning and Supports (1 program)

Programs that support adults and students in developing 21st century skills and competencies such as self-management, social awareness, responsible decision-making, and building trusting relationships, in order to handle ourselves, our relationships, and our work/studies effectively. This is inclusive of programs supporting alternative discipline approaches such as restorative justice.
