Program Description | Upward Bound (UB) is a national program that promotes college-readiness among US citizens and permanent residents from low-income and/or first-generation families, those whose parents do not hold a bachelor's degree. UB provides essential support to participants in their journey towards college entrance and offers opportunities for them to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. The program focuses on goal setting, career exploration, and college preparation to equip students with the necessary skills for higher education. The primary goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education, enroll in, and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.
The Upward Bound program runs year-round and is divided into two components. During the academic year, students receive support in the form of tutoring, advising, one-on-one mentoring, career exploration opportunities, college advising, financial aid application and scholarship application assistance, and opportunities to tour college campuses locally and one out-of-state trip. In the summer, UB students spend six weeks at Seattle University, where they get to experience the academic and social atmosphere of a major university. They attend classes in SU classrooms and stay overnight in dorms for 3-4 days. |
